Radar Log Book
Radar Log Book
A Radar Log is a very useful record book to have on the bridge of a ship. It is of value for the ship's owner so that he will be able to assess the benefits of the radar installation; it can also be useful for the manufacturer of the installation so that improvements can be made in the equipment, if required! Emmanaughty69 pov Last but not least a radar log will assist the navigator himself. Its record will give a picture of the particular characteristics and limitations of a radar set and will teach him to be critical in the interpretation of the display. The log will also be of great value when new officers or relief officers come on board. It provides the history of a radar set and its behaviour under different conditions and circumstances, and offers details which cannot be discussed in a short time. Brown, Son & Ferguson, Ltd. have produced such a Log Book. Starting with an introduction and two pages where the navigator can record details of the radar installation(s) (contained in the specification), it then consists of two parts: Log of Operations and Log of Targets. Each part contains 25 lined double-pages where the particulars specified at the top of the vertical columns can be written down by the officer who is in charge of maintenance or the navigator who actually is observing the radar display. The columns of the Log of Operations have the following printed headings: Date/ No Voyage/Type of Radar in Use/Periods of Use/ Location/Use for Navigation and/or Collision/Readings of Performance Monitors or Testmeters/Particulars of Unsatisfactory Performance/Repairs and/or Modifications/Remarks (Type of Weather, Ship Vibrations etc). The Log of Targets contains columns for the following particulars: Date/Location/ X- or S- Band/Weather Conditions (Rain, Snow, Hail, Sand, Dust Echoes, Sea State and Clutter)/Atmospheric Conditions (Normal, Super- and Sub-Refraction)/Detection Range/identification Range/Radar Use as an Aid to Collision Avoidance and Navigation (Landfall, Coastal, Pilotage)/ARPA Performance (Acquisition and Tracking, Target Swop, Computer Saturation)/Remarks. The book has a large format (approximately 305 x 229mm)

Reeds Astro Navigation Tables 2026
Reeds Astro Navigation Tables 2026
This is the established book of annual astro-navigation tables compiled specifically for the needs of boaters.
This superbly compact almanac and sight reduction tables contains all the information the ocean-going sailor needs in order to navigate by the sun, moon, stars and planets using tables devised by practical ocean navigators. This book, together with a sextant, enables sailors to navigate confidently and safely when out of the sight of land.
The book continues to feature the well-received additions of the past few years, including forms to help determine True Altitude (for the sun, stars and planets), Calculated Altitude (using the versine formula) and Azimuth (using the ABC Tables) as well as a pro forma for calculating Intercept. These tables along with clear and easy to use star ID charts mean you can resolve any calculation you're ever going to need. There is also an introductory section on practising ashore with helpful worked examples as an aide memoire. With 8 extra pages and an improved layout there is plenty of space for making notes and calculations.
Being so easy to use, Reeds tables encourage active navigation and a better understanding by sailors of where they have been and where to go next – rewarding in itself and essential in the event of GPS failure.

Response To Marine Oil Spills
Response To Marine Oil Spills
The primary objectives of a rapid response to oil spills are a return to normal activity as quickly as possible and minimization of the risk of oil contaminating environmentally or aesthetically important areas. Since its establishment in 1968, ITOPF has responded to several hundred shipping incidents worldwide providing objective technical advice on clean-up measures, environmental and economic effects, and compensation.
ITOPF has also provided remote advice at numerous other incidents. The incidents have involved crude oil from tankers and bunker fuel, chemicals and bulk cargoes from all types of ship. Advice is also occasionally given about potential oil spills from other sources, including pipelines and offshore installations, and physical damage to coral reefs resulting from ship groundings. The first-hand experience of ITOPF?s staff, gained through direct involvement in pollution incidents, is utilised during damage assessment, contingency planning and training assignments, as well as in the production of technical publications.
This is the ultimate reference aid for all ships that carry oil that may be involved in a pollution incident, whether it is from cargo oil or bunker fuel oil, for any jetty, pier, berth or quay that may have to deal with a marine pollution incident and for all other parties that may find themselves called to react to a pollution incident, such as the Coastguard, port authorities or State responders.
